At St John the Baptist primary school we aim to provide children with a design technology education that is relevant in our rapidly changing world.  Integrating the Harmony Project into the primary school design and technology curriculum encourages pupils to think creatively while considering sustainability in the design process. By exploring natural forms, materials, and purposeful design inspired by the principles of nature, children learn how to create products that are both functional and environmentally responsible, promoting thoughtful, sustainable choices from an early age. We strive to encourage our children to become problem solvers who can work creatively on a shared project. We believe that high-quality design technology lessons will inspire children to think independently, innovatively and develop creative, procedural and technical understanding.
Design and Technology encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. At St John the Baptist primary, we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, computing and art.
Children are given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses and its effectiveness and are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers. Teachers use Rosenshine’s principles of teaching to ensure learning is that learning is effective and a key element of this is to break learning down into smaller steps so that learning supports all children, including children with SEN, and exposes them to a wide range of media, including: Textiles, food and woodwork. Through this, children will develop their skills, vocabulary and resilience. This starts in the early years foundation stage, where children are given regular opportunities to create with a wide range of materials. This is built upon in the consequent key stages, where children show progression in key skills. These carefully planned experiences will remain with them for the rest of their lives, equipping them well for further education and beyond.
Our Design Technology Subject Leader is Zeba Tillat.
