At St John the Baptist RC Primary School, we strive to ensure that all of our children become effective, competent communicators and good listeners. We aim to help them express their opinions, articulate their feelings, and formulate thoughtful responses to a variety of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, using appropriate technical vocabulary.

We encourage our pupils to develop a strong interest in words and their meanings, building a rich and growing vocabulary in both their spoken and written language. A love of reading is central to our approach, and we aim for children to read widely and for pleasure, engaging with and understanding a broad range of text types and genres.

In writing, we support our pupils to write in a variety of styles and forms, always considering audience and purpose. We nurture their imagination, creativity, and critical thinking, helping them to become confident and thoughtful writers. Alongside this, we ensure that they use grammar and punctuation accurately, understand spelling conventions, and produce written work that is effective and well-presented.

Our English Subject Leader is Lauran McGuigan.
