At St John the Baptist Primary School, we aim to meet the needs of our pupils, by using a variety of teaching and learning styles and enquiry questions. The use of the Harmony Project in our history curriculum provides a meaningful way for children to explore how past societies lived in balance with the natural world. By examining historical approaches to sustainability, such as traditional farming, architecture, and community life, pupils can develop a deeper understanding of how human choices impact the environment over time and how we can learn from the past to shape a more sustainable future.

We provide all children with whole class teaching alongside the opportunity to work in small groups for discussion work and independent research. Children are encouraged to ask and answer questions to develop their critical and analytical skills. In history, we provide the children with the opportunity to explore and use a range of sources and data (including maps, timelines, photographs, information books and the internet) to support their ideas.

We plan and provide opportunities, which will help pupils gain a deeper understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Across the school, the units planned, build on prior learning to develop and deepen the children’s historical knowledge and skills. This allows the children to be increasingly challenged as they move through school. Children in EYFS have the opportunity to develop their understanding of the world. They have planned opportunities for them to explore themselves and their families and the significance of the people who help us, in our world.

It is important for children to develop a sense of identity through learning about the past and we want them to know how history has shaped their own lives. This is why it is essential that the curriculum fits the needs of our children: providing units that reflect the diversity of the religions and cultures we have in our school. History provides the opportunity for us to teach the children how we can learn from events that have happened in the past and how their actions can have an impact on the world. It allows us to prepare children for the future and how they can be compassionate members of our local, wider and global communities.
