At St John the Baptist, we are passionate about our children becoming competent and confident mathematicians. From EYFS to Year 6, the children engage in the maths curriculum through a mastery approach, using White Rose Maths resources, where they have the opportunity to delve deeper into their understanding and make links between mathematical concepts. Through this, we have created an engaging maths curriculum, which allows the opportunity to discuss and explain their mathematical knowledge and understanding each day. In EYFS, the mathematical concepts are supported through the daily use of a wide range of manipulatives, stories and nursery rhymes and in the daily starter, which enables the children to keep previously learned concepts in their working memory. The learning is supplemented with additional maths areas, both indoor and outdoor which enable to children to consolidate their learning through the use of manipulatives, but also to expose the children to future learning. In years 1-6, in addition to using White Rose Maths resources, the children complete daily maths starters on a different element of arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions). This gives them the opportunity to keep these key concepts in their working memory, and become skilled in these arithmetic concepts. From Year 2 onwards, the children have the opportunity to test their knowledge in a weekly arithmetic test, where each child celebrates their continued success, no matter their starting point. We have worked hard to establish an environment in classrooms where successes are celebrated but where it is acceptable to make mistakes. Our curriculum ensures that any child, no matter their starting point or socio-economic status, can become a confident mathematician.
