At St John the Baptist RC Primary School, our music provision is delivered in partnership with Rochdale Music Service. This collaboration ensures high-quality music education for all our pupils, providing them with engaging and enriching learning experiences.

All whole class ensemble lessons follow a dual-threaded approach. The first thread focuses on developing general musicianship skills, where all elements of music—such as rhythm, pitch, dynamics, and structure—are explored, practised, and developed. The second thread provides specialist instrumental tuition, during which children are taught specific skills related to their instrument. This includes ensemble playing, improvisation, performance, and evaluation. These two strands are carefully integrated and continually reinforced throughout each lesson, ensuring a holistic and balanced approach to music education.

The pieces selected for each project are chosen thoughtfully to offer children opportunities to listen to and discuss a variety of musical genres, historical periods, and cultural traditions. Through this, pupils gain a broader understanding and appreciation of music.

By the end of each project, children are expected to have developed a wide range of skills that extend beyond music. These include cooperation, teamwork, improved listening, leadership, performance confidence, increased self-esteem, and greater concentration.

Our Music Subject Leader is Aaishah Saadiqah.
