At St John the Baptist RC we want our children to be naturally curious about the world around them. We want to embrace their sense of wonder and to guide them into becoming enquiry-based learners. The intent is that we prepare our children for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world today and in the future.

Science in our school begins with the youngest of our children in the Early Years setting where it plays an integral role in harnessing the natural inquisitiveness of children. Children are given the opportunity to promote respect for living organisms and the natural environment.  Through a wide range of purposeful, planned and structured learning opportunities from the moment children enter our school, they will acquire specific skills and subject knowledge to extend our children’s scientific concept of their world.

Scientific enquiry skills are embedded in each topic the children study and these topics are revisited and developed throughout their time at school. Science is taught as a series of carefully planned lessons to ensure coverage in line with the National Curriculum requirements. Topics, such as Plants, are taught in Key Stage One and studied again in further detail throughout Key Stage Two, allowing the children to grow in their understanding, building upon their prior knowledge and increasing their enthusiasm for the topics whilst embedding this procedural knowledge into the long-term memory.

Science teaching at St John the Baptist RC involves adapting and extending the curriculum to match all pupils’ needs to ensure they are challenged and achieve success, regardless of their starting point. We believe that every teacher is a teacher of all children including those with SEND and disabilities and it is our duty to value each individual child to enable them to enjoy learning through an inclusive curriculum.

We acknowledge the needs of our learners and recognise that they need time to experiment, try things out, and think on their own. We make sure that appropriate resources and support are provided to allow all children to access and engage with learning this core subject and opportunities are sought to teach science through all of the primary subjects. We aim to encourage open-mindedness, self-assessment, perseverance and developing the skills of investigation – including: observing, measuring, predicting, hypothesising, experimenting, communicating, interpreting, explaining and evaluating.

Our Science subject leader is Rachel Pinto.
