We believe at St John the Baptist Primary school that Art is a subject that can help us to understand and give meaning to the world in which we live. Integrating the Harmony Project into the primary school art curriculum is a fantastic way to inspire creativity while deepening pupils’ understanding of sustainability. By exploring natural patterns, seasonal cycles, and the interconnectedness of the environment through art, children not only develop their artistic skills but also learn to value and care for the world around them. We recognise and value the importance Art and Design has in allowing children to explore their ideas by experimenting, inventing and creating their own artwork, using a range of different materials. Art allows the children to express and share their individual creativity and develop their independence, judgement and self-reflection, which are skills that can be transferred into other areas of their learning.

At St John the Baptist, our commitment is to deliver a high-quality art and design curriculum which engages, inspires and challenges pupils whilst equipping them with the skills to experiment, invent and create their own work. Our carefully planned art lessons provide many opportunities for pupils to produce creative artwork exploring their ideas, allowing them to become proficient in art, craft and design techniques and learn about great artists. The Harmony Project themes and enquiry questions offer a range of opportunities allowing pupils to experience all art forms (drawing, painting, 3D designs and print making). The embedded curriculum aims to develop pupils’ experimenting, evaluating and creativity skills whilst enhancing their knowledge of great artists, craft makers and designers.

Our Art Subject Leader is Natasha Hockey.
