At St Johns, our commitment is to provide an exceptional French education that nurtures pupils’ curiosity and enhances their global awareness. Through our carefully crafted and customized French curriculum, pupils can articulate their thoughts and ideas fluently in both spoken and written form within another modern language. Our selected themes and thoughtfully planned lessons offer numerous opportunities for pupils to engage in practical communication, develop and share new perspectives, and explore literature in its original language. The customized curriculum aims to equip pupils with fundamental skills and knowledge in both spoken and written French, which can be developed and extended upon throughout Key Stage 2.
We aim to conduct an annual review and an update of all content, ensuring progression of skills, in both speaking and writing, within each academic year. This ensures that the tailored Twinkl French scheme not only builds upon pupils existing skills but effectively prepares them for the study of French in Key Stage 3, aligning with the national curriculum requirements.
At St Johns we offer a carefully planned sequence of lessons, ensuring progressive coverage of the skills required within speaking and listening as well as reading and writing. This enables the pupils to gradually enhance their skills. The engaging lessons ensure that the teaching allows pupils to express their ideas in another language as well as to understand and respond to its speakers. The well-planned lessons are supported with differentiated resources that cater for pupils’ different needs allowing them to access the French learning in both speech and in writing.
The teaching of French in KS2 provides an appropriate balance of spoken and written French and lays a strong foundation for further teaching of the foreign language in Key stage 3. Although MFL national curriculum starts within KS2, we expose EYFS and KS1 pupils to some French vocabulary through French Enrichment days e.g. colours and numbers. In lower KS2, pupils acquire basic skills and understanding of French with a strong focus on speaking and listening. These skills are then embedded and expanded upon in upper KS2, alongside reading and writing which gradually moves on to more complex language concepts.
In conclusion, at St Johns we intend to equip pupils with the essential skills to interpret, create, and exchange meaning within and across various cultures as this will help them as global citizens.
Our MFL Subject Leader is Farvah Zahir.
