At St. John the Baptist primary school, our aim is to give children a thorough and ambitious education in Geography. The incorporation of the Harmony Project into the primary school geography curriculum offers a powerful way to connect children with the natural world while fostering an understanding of sustainability. Through studying local and global environments, natural systems, and the impact of human activity, pupils can explore how geography helps us make informed choices about caring for the planet and living more sustainably.
We seek to create a life-long love of the subject, though teaching our children about diverse places, people and resources. Through the study of natural and human environments, as well as physical and human processes, our desire is to provide a sense of awe and wonder about the world they live in. The geography curriculum at St John the Baptist primary enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas, which is used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills.
Our curriculum is designed to provide our children with the subject specific language they need to describe, question and discuss the world, as well as their place in it. Teachers use Rosenshine’s principles of teaching to ensure learning is that learning is effective and a key element of this is to break learning down into smaller steps so that learning supports all children including children with SEN. This starts from the early years foundation stage where children make sense of their physical world through exploration both indoors and outdoors through carefully planned opportunities. This is built upon in consequent key stages where children show progression in key skills. We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives, equipping them well for further education and beyond.
Our Geography Subject Leader is Zeba Tillat.
